How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Vermont

Vermont Affordable Health InsuranceVermont's Green Mountain Care program has several health insurance options for low-income families in Vermont. Vermont Health Access Plan (VHAP) helps people who have not had health insurance coverage for 12 months or more.

It is more adults 18 and older with incomes not exceeding $680 a month for an individual, $1,385 for a family of four, and additional income levels depending on family size. This program covers hospital, doctor, prescription and mental health service. Premiums are anywhere from $0 to $49 a month depending on family size and income.

Vermont's Medicaid program offers health insurance for parents, children under 21, pregnant women, people over 65, blind and disabled who have low incomes. The cost is either free or low cost. It includes full medical coverage including vision and dental, long-term care and physical therapy.

Free or low-cost health insurance is available for children under 18 and pregnant women through the Dr. Dynasaur program. Pregnant women with annual incomes not exceeding $30,264 would pay a monthly premium of no more than $15.

Those who do not qualify for Green Mountain Care, Medicaid or Dr. Dynasaur programs can apply for health care assistance through Vermont's Catamount Health program if they are 18 or older and have been uninsured for 12 months or longer. Prescription Assistance is also available to help people 65 or older pay for their prescription medicine.
