How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Texas

Texas Affordable Health InsuranceTexas Medicaid program provides medical care coverage for low-income families in Texas. Medicaid in Texas has five different programs for low-income residents to meet the various health needs of Texans. It includes Traditional Medicaid, STAR, STAR+PLUS, and STAR HEALTH.

Children's Medicaid is free to uninsured children under 19. Income limitations apply. A family of four, for example, would qualify if their family income is no more than $1,921 a month. A family of four whose income is no more than $3,842 a month would qualify for Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP); pregnant women can also qualify for CHIP for prenatal medical services for her unborn child.

People 65 or older, or those with disabilities, may qualify to receive medical insurance through Medicaid. Depending on income levels, this program may be at no cost. Medicaid for Long-Term Care is also available but the insured must pay a portion of the cost; this program pays for one year of long-term care coverage. Medicaid programs are administered through Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Medicare Savings Programs helps low-income families pay for Medicare premiums, deductibles and co-payments. Income limits apply and range from $908 to $1,815 for an individual to $1,226 to $2,452 for a couple per month.
