How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Ohio

Ohio Affordable Health InsuranceOhio's Medicaid programs offer several choices for low-income residents to ensure most everyone has access to affordable health care.

Healthy Start, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is funded by the state along with matching federal funds and provides health insurance for children under 19 and pregnant women in families whose income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). This program also offers affordable options for insured children up to 19 in families within 150% of FPL.

Healthy Families is a Medicaid program for families with children under 19 whose incomes are within 90% of FPL. There is also a Medicaid program for 19 and 20 year olds who either live with or are dependent on their parents.

Medicaid For Older Adults and People With Disabilities is offered to citizens 65 or older, blind or disabled whose incomes are at or below 64% of FPL. Medicaid Buy-In For Workers With Disabilities (MBIWD) is designed to help disabled people 16 through 64 who still work but do not qualify for traditional Medicaid. To be eligible, their incomes must be at or below 250% of FPL. However, disabled, working people with incomes at the 150% level can also receive benefits from this program at an affordable premium cost.

Those who qualify for Medicare but need help paying for their premiums and deductibles can apply for assistance through the Medicare Premium Assistance Program (MPAP). Four income eligibility levels are designed to meet varying needs and range from 100% to 200% of FPL. Refuge Medical Assistance (RMA) Program offers full Medicaid health coverage for refuges for a period of eight months after their arrival to the U.S. In order to qualify, their incomes must be at or below 100% of FPL and be ineligible for regular Medicaid.
