How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Minnesota

Minnesota Affordable Health InsuranceMinnesota has two primary health care insurance programs for low-income families. They are Medical Assistance (MA) and MinnesotaCare.

Medical Assistance (MA) is broader than traditional Medicare and covers a wider range of benefits for low-income adults, children, elderly and disabled. It is funded by both state and federal monies and is designed for a broad range of uninsured people. This program provides full medical coverage with no monthly premium charged. Monthly deductibles are only $2.55, co-payments on doctor visits are $3 and $3.50 for emergency-room treatment for non-emergency treatment, and co-payments on prescription drugs are $3 or $1 up to $12 per month. MinnesotaCare Expanded is for pregnant women and children under 21 with no deductibles or co-payments involved. MinnesotaCare Basic Plus Parents, MinnesotaCare Basic Plus Two Parents, MinnesotaCare Basic Plus One Adults Without Children all offer affordable health insurance based on income guidelines. Eligible individuals and families pay only a $2.55 monthly deductible, co-payment of $3 on doctor visits and prescription drugs and $3.50 for non-emergency ER visits, and a $25 co-payment on eyeglasses. MinnesotaCare programs charge a low monthly premium.

Medicare Savings Program helps people pay their Medicare premiums, deductibles and co-payments. Low Income Subsidy (LIS) offers either partial or full payment on prescription drug premiums, co-pays and deductibles for those already receiving hospital and medical insurance coverage through Medicare. Total assets must be under $13,070 for an individual. To be eligible, one must enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan.
