How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Louisiana
Health care insurance and assistance programs for low-income families in the state of Louisiana are managed by the Department of Health and Hospitals.
Several programs are easily found on the department's website that helps citizens locate the program that is right for them.
Medicaid plans are designed to help families with monthly income levels that range from 100% to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Low-income children under 19, those over 65 and persons with disabilities can apply for coverage through Louisiana's Medicaid Program.
Families whose income is too high for Medicaid but need insurance for their children can qualify for Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) as long as household income is at or below 200% of the FPL, children under 19 are currently uninsured. LaCHIP Affordable Plan is also available for those with incomes up to but not exceeding 250% of the FPL.
If a family has a child with a disability but does not qualify for a Medicaid program, they may be eligible for Family Opportunity Act Medicaid benefits. They can buy Medicaid health insurance coverage at an affordable price. Qualifying incomes for this program are up to but not exceeding 300% of the FPL.
Louisiana Health Insurance Premium Payment Program (LaHIPP) is for families who are receiving employer-sponsored health insurance benefits but have a family member who is on Medicaid. This program pays some or even all insurance premiums for the employee and family members. This program is part of the Louisiana Medicaid program.
