How to Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Georgia

Georgia Affordable Health InsuranceIn Georgia, the Division of Aging Services, Georgia Department of Human Services, manages the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).

SHIP is a national program that gives grants to states through the Federal Medicare agency. This allows each state to offer Medicare assistance at the state level. Through SHIP, Georgia is able to give its citizens healthcare options such as Medicare Advantage, provide long-term care insurance, and help low-income residents receive healthcare assistance through public programs.

Those with low incomes can get help paying for Medicare Part A & B through Georgia's Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Programs. The Low Income Subsidy program offers lower co-payments on prescription drugs and pays for most or even all premiums and deductibles. Income must be under 16,755 (individual) per year; limits on resources also apply. The Medicare Savings Program pays for Medicare premiums, deductibles and co-payments, with annual savings up to $1,100 or more. Income is limited to $15,324 (individual); limits on resources also apply. Citizens who still need help with prescription drug costs can apply for assistance through Georgia's Patient Assistance Programs.

Georgia Department of Community Health has established a healthcare program for uninsured children called PeachCare for Kids. It includes hospitalization and emergency room visits, prescription drugs, dental and vision services and mental health care. Three health insurance plans are offered under this program. Income requirements are at or below 235% of the Federal Poverty Level.
