How To Find Affordable Health Insurance in the State of Alabama

Alabama Affordable Health InsuranceThe state of Alabama offers a wide variety of affordable, low-cost or no-cost health insurance programs to low-income individuals and families in Alabama.

Trade workers and people receiving benefits from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation may be eligible for a federal tax credit that could pay as much as 65% of health insurance premiums. Employees in public education may be eligible for the Public Education Employees' Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP) that provides Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) premium discounts or other discounts on health services.

State and federal funded Medicaid programs are available to low-income families and those with ongoing medical problems. Children of low-income families working for the state can receive medical insurance through the State Employees' Children's Health Insurance Plans (SECHIP) program. Children must be under 19, and state employees' incomes must be 100%-200% of the state's poverty level.

The All Kids program offered by the Alabama Department of Public Health helps families whose incomes are too high for Medicaid and are not enrolled in an employer health insurance program. Members of the Alabama Farmers Federation (AFF) may be eligible for health insurance through its Alfa Health Plan; members must be under age 65 and in good health. Women under age 65 who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer or breast cancer are eligible for health services through the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment program.
